Exercising his option at the 16 year service point HJC left the RAF in 1976, at the age of 40 to go into business on his own account. He was divorced from his first wife in 1978 and met and eventually married EDNA RIDLEY-PAGE. Also divorced, she had two children
JOHN - a Chelsea fan (well you can’t win them all) and daughter LESLIE (yes spelt that way as Edna had filled in the birth certificate form with the wrong spelling!)
A trained hairdresser she had own business in Ascot at age 19. EDNA knew nothing about Rugby then and still doesn’t now but she had other attributes! They are still married today. Now 79 and 72 respectfully, they are retired and living in Berkshire. HJC has now become a daily walker of his furry friend Archie for his exercise.

On reading his Life story his wife Edna commented: “ I had no idea of the extent of John's sporting and outdoor activities. Quite an action man wasn't he ? I have never been a sports follower of any sort. My own interest was in skating at Richmond Ice Rink and performing in the Queen's Coronation Ice Show . This activity finished when I went into my own hairdressing business at age 19.
I can see now that the disciplines he followed in his early life prepared him well for the future. As a Builder/Developer of some magnificent properties, he was first on site every morning , challenging his tradesmen and achieving shorter construction times than the norm. His organising ability ensured that all materials were on site when needed.
So I am left with a physical wreck sitting in his armchair controlling the TV remote ! He has been an exciting man to be with so I think that he actually deserves
that. I have to ask myself if I would have been prepared to put up with
all his absences in his sporting days. We will never really know the
answer to that !".
In the 80’s and 90’s HJC became a Builder/Developer on his own account in the Ascot,
Sunningdale, Virginia Water area, building major family homes of 3000 – 6000 sq ft. He specialised in ‘Raise That Roof’, a concept where he bought bungalows and at least doubled their size by putting on an upper floor and giving them a period style. Edna was the interior designer for the business.
In January 2010, HJC with wife and Daisy Dog were driving at 60mph in the early morning darkness on a dual-carriageway near Farnham. Suddenly three loose horses ran across the road and the Volvo Estate collided with the middle one. It was a serious impact. Remarkably, HJC received only minor cuts and bruises to the face and hands whilst Edna and Daisy were unhurt. The ambulance crew who attended commented that it was the Volvo which had saved them.
THE CHILDREN OF HJC
RUSSELL (RUSS, SEATED) BORN 28 JUNE 1960
MICHAEL (MICKEY) BORN 11 DEC 1961
CAROLINE (CAZ) BORN 12 NOV 1967
Russell and Michael both went to Sherborne Preparatory School coached in rugby by the well know Headmaster, Robin Lindsay. Russ was a centre and Mickey a scrum half. Both showed talent.
On leaving Sherborne, Russ went on to Allhallows School, Rousden, Lyme Regis and Mickey to Windsor Grammar School. Whilst there Mickey was selected for the England under 15’s squad of 30 to go to the Bisham Abbey for training and selection for the match v Poland under 15’s XV.
Mickey was selected to play for the England u 15 team but the following week, riding pillion on a friends motorbike, it crashed injuring his leg and was unable to gain his first cap! Have we not heard this story before……..? LIKE FATHER LIKE SON! After leaving school Mickey moved on to Richmond but stopped playing when other interests took over his life.
Russell has two sons, Jack and Alex both now playing rugby.
|| Caroline has
now given HJC two grand-daughters, Chloe and Phoebe, "two spirited
little minxes to be proud of" he said.
Their 'Auntie Pat' had been blessed with a beautiful soprano singing voice and became a semi-professional stage singer in Summer Season shows at seaside resorts along with Ronnie Carroll, Denis
Lotis, Larry Grayson and supported Johnny Ray in Paris on his European tour. She married her pianist Dick Bright and used Beverley Brown as her stage name.
